Purpose of this policy

The purpose of this privacy policy is to let the users of this website (Open-earth.org) know what private information we collect about them, in what cases, and what we do with it.

Date of validity

This policy is effective as of 20 November 2017

Private information we collect

Please note that you can use this website without disclosing any private or personal information.

However you will need to provide private information if you choose to create an account (usually in order to publish stories or make comments). In this case you will need to provide your name, email address, a password, and the answer to the "user identification question".

These data are used as follows:
  • In each document the author's name is displayed to the public (see Terms of Use for our 'real name' policy).
  • The email address is not disclosed to the public. It is used as login identifier and for communication, especially during the document creation process (confirmation of publication and other possible messages from the editors).
  • The password is required for account login and is crypted for database storage. By definition it remains confidential.
  • When creating an account, users are requested to select a 'user identification' question type and to provide an answer for it. Users who have forgotten either their email address or password will need the answer to access their account. By definition this information is confidential.

Use of private information

We respect our users' privacy and keep their information confidential, unless required by law to disclose it.

Private information is only used as stated above in: Private information we collect.

Use of cookies

Our system uses session cookies to identify your session when you log into your account, for instance to create or work on a document. For such uses your browser needs to be set to accept cookies. These cookies contain no personal information and are destroyed when you log out.

Otherwise you can use our website with your browser set not to accept cookies.

Statistical information

We do not collect statistical information about your visit (such as IP address, pages visited, search terms used, etc).

Links to other websites

You may find in our website links that point to external websites. We are not responsible for the private information management of such websites

Data security

Encryption. When you submit private information (as part of account creation or modification), the data is transmitted using Secure Socket Layer (SSL), the industry standard for data encryption.

Changes to this policy

We reserve the right to make changes to this policy at any time and in any manner. If the changes affect the way private information is used we will try and give you advance notice, using your email address on record.
