High levels of air pollution recorded both over the country as a whole, and over cities

- Over India as a whole air pollution is high, with both natural and human-related origins. Seasonal wind patterns have a strong impact, by either increasing pollution with dust brought in from the deserts of Arabia and elsewhere, or helping to clear pollutants when their general direction is seaward as in winter (see Science Daily 17 Sep 10, link below).
- In the particular case of Delhi the air quality index is exceeded most days, the worst time being winter. Air quality improved a few years ago when buses and 3-wheelers were converted from gasoline and diesel to compressed natural gas. However the situation has degraded again with the continued increase in vehicle numbers (see India Environment Portal 27 Sep 10, link below).
